Lesson 7: Dating—the Benefits and Dangers
Okay, maybe not. Last February I decided to try a series or book. So I downloaded the Kindle version and quickly read it. After seeing how incredibly practical the book is, I wanted to get it into the hands of every teenager in our ministry.
Fervr interviews regular contributor Alex Greaves for his thoughts on Christians, dating, and sexual purity. Q: Alex, what does the Bible say.
Courtship and dating are some of the least discussed topics in the church. Yet dating has caused the most havoc, destroyed countless lives, resulted in unwanted pregnancies and abortions, and even split churches apart. This has led many church youth groups to become havens for dating and premarital sex. The following are guidelines that best fit young people but many of the principles still apply to older and more mature single adults looking for a mate.
I have taught each of my five children the difference between dating and courtship. Dating is an unbiblical method crafted by the world with no boundaries or ethics with the following assumed rules and values:. Thus, what initially starts off as French kissing quickly accelerates to petting, fondling, and then full-blown sexual intimacy.
Thus, the relationship ends with at least one of the individuals feeling devastated and wounded especially because of soul ties that were created from sexual intimacy.

Fervr interviews regular contributor Alex Greaves for his thoughts on Christians, dating, and sexual purity. Q: Alex, what does the Bible say about dating? Q: Okay, does the Bible say anything that might impact Christians when they begin thinking about dating and sexual purity? A: It definitely does! In Genesis , we read: A man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.
One of my favorite classes as a Communication Studies major back in college was a Christian Relationships class where various aspects of relationships—friendship, singleness, dating, marriage, family, etc. I think one of the reasons I find this topic so interesting is because we were created by a relational God who created us for connection , and relationships are so incredibly vital to each of our lives in one way or another.
This makes me want to continually grow in learning how to do them well. In particular, dating and romantic relationships are something I love learning about. In the beginning God created man and woman, and ever since we have been asking questions about love, marriage, sex, and romance.
But entering the dating world still felt scary. And complicated. How do we date to the glory of God? Or are we supposed to call it courtship? What’s.
First is the goal of partnership with parents. Youth group is a supplement. Thus, we encourage parents to communicate with us any special goals, challenges, or concerns they have with respect to their children. We study the Bible along with apologetics and theology. Some studies indicate that as many as 8 out of 10 incoming freshmen who identify themselves as Christians abandon their faith by the time they graduate.
This is because many churches simply are not training their young people. We recognize the problem and are working hard to train our teens. We also place great priority on the overall body of our group. This is our third objective: to build a community of young believers seeking to honor God and serve together. The projects we pursue have not only the goal of service in mind—such as defending the unborn or reaching out to the neglected—but also allow for teens to fortify their relationships with each other as a unit.
Priority is always given to the group. We have a wide range of ages—some of our members are thirteen years old while others are preparing for college—yet we strive to bring all together.
So you think you can date?
In many ways this chapter gets right to the heart of Christian dating. What do I look for in a boyfriend or girlfriend? Are you ready to date? What makes marriage the most important decision you might ever make is that you are going to be living with that person for the rest of your life. What follows are four guidelines to think through carefully as you begin to look for someone to date.
Christian teens form all kinds of relationships. From friendships to dating, these are the years that Christian teens start building ties outside of the family. While these relationships are an exciting time for Christian teens, they also come with their own issues and hazards. Suddenly the issues of sex and boundaries start to arise, and teens find themselves having to choose sides on “hot button” topics like homosexuality and abortion.
There is a lot of growing to do in all aspects of relationships, and having Biblical and Christian guidance is essential. Friendship is the foundation of any good relationship. Whether you are looking to make friends or keep the ones you have, friendship is important in any Christian teen’s life. This is also why Christian teens need to work at keeping their friendships strong. Think of the traits that are important in any relationship like honesty and trust, and they apply to your friends.
Avoiding pitfalls like gossip and lying go a long way in building friendships that last a lifetime. Dating is the part of many Christian teens’ lives. Whether you are choosing not to date or looking to set boundaries in your dating relationships, there is a lot to consider when you take a relationship to the next step beyond friendship. Knowing what you want from a dating relationship and finding ways to resist temptation will allow you to build a productive and Christian dating relationship.
The Bible covers sex quite a bit , and for good reason.
Six Ways to Prepare Young Christians for Dating
The Bible doesn’t talk a lot specifically about dating. There is a reason for that. Dating is a very new practice in the history of humanity. The idea of choosing someone to go out and spend one on one time with outside of a marriage commitment is still very new.

If they did, it would be a relationship worth pursuing, the ultimate goal of which would be marriage. Today, many young people do not specifically date with the thought of marriage in mind. However, it is important for those who are dating to realize that anytime you are dating, the possibility of a permanent relationship might occur. People have been known to fall in love even when it is least expected.
Therefore we could say that dating is a “prelude to marriage. If we agree that it is possible for one who is dating to fall in love with the one they are courting, then we can logically assume that it is of the utmost importance for a Christian to be dating one who is of like faith. If dating ultimately leads to marriage, what Christian would want to be linked for life to an unbeliever? This is not to say it is sinful to date one who is not a member of the Lord’s body, but my question would be, “Why would you want to?
Although not specifically named in the Bible as desirable characteristics for potential mates, there are a few qualities every Christian should possess: All of these are Biblical examples of a Christ-like nature. That is what we should gravitate toward — one with a Christ-like nature.
